BILLY GOULD MIGRATED TO EUROPE BECAUSE OF GEORGE BUSH

Billy Gould, former leader and bassist of “Faith No More”, recently was in Belgrade where he signed a contract about license release of his new album with the band ‘Brujeria’, which someone described as the most mystical metal band ever (it consists of “Fear Factory”, “Faith No More”, and “Napalm Death” members). Music publisher for all ex-Yugoslav countries and for the territory of Albania will be “Rock Express Records. “

Billy, who visited Belgrade incognito 6 years ago, says that he really loves our country. His new project is called “Kultur Shock” and because of explicit social and political texts, it was banned on a large number of American radio stations after 11 September.

– “I love Yugoslavia, and I really like Belgrade, ” says Billy Gould at the beginning of our conversation for the “Blic” newspaper.

– ” What is so special about Yugoslavia? I don’t know, it’s many things. I think that your living culture, especially what I see here in Belgrade, is very urban and it’s a real city life, but somehow again it’s so close to the south. It is cool. You are very nice and warm people, and that reminds me of Spain, because I lived in Barcelona. Although I didn’t have much time to see the ruins after the NATO bombing, I think that the city is still beautiful, the people are kind, and the girls are very beautiful. I liked very much “Skadarlija” (old tavern (café) that is very popular in Serbia) and old ancient music I listened to there… and you know, it’s old music but, somehow, very modern, so I had to buy several CDs and take them to Paris, where I live now.”

After the disbandment of “Faith No More,” you turned to music publishing?

– “When you work 15 years in the same band, disbanding is just like divorce, and you are suddenly in a position where you are thinking about what you did before, how you lived before, and what you will do in the future. For me, it was somehow natural to open my own record label, which would have a goal of helping European bands break through the music barriers that exist in the USA. “Brujeria” is a very popular band in its genre, and it is very commercial, so all the money that we earn we use for promoting new young bands from Denmark, Spain, and maybe from Serbia, we’ll see.”

I heard that you are anti-globalist like Manu Chao?

– “No, I am not like him, although I think that involving politics in music is a bad combination. However, as I have grown older, I am thinking more about politics, perhaps because of things I have seen. Thing that really bothers me is the way that America “sells” actually everything, but won’t nothing to buy. Therefore, we are exporting our culture, which is largely commercially controlled. However, on the other hand, we will not allow any other culture in, and especially, we will not permit any kind of influence. I believe that George W. Bush is a much worse president than Bill Clinton. I said I would migrate from America if Bush won, and I did it. People often don’t know what is good and what is bad because they lack an understanding of the difference. I know the difference, and really I wouldn’t like the world to depend on American culture one day.”
